CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY presents 'WOMEN OF CLARE' ( LUCILLE ELLIS) & 'DRUMCLIFF [Section B]' (FLAN HEHIR)

CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY
presents
two 'must have' books for those interested in the history of
Co Clare.

The book launch for both volumes will take place on
Thursday, November 9, 2017
at 8pm at
the Old Ground Hotel

Women of Clare is the third book for Lucille Ellis... her previous books have been Bindon Street and Bank Place and Ennis at Work in the 19th Century.

Women of Clare tells of the lives of 16 women who had a great influence in lives all over the world. These women came from all walks of life, from all manner of occupations.

Drumcliff (Section B) is the second publication for Flan Heir. His first was The Turnpike. Flan had the asssitance of his wife, Bella, in recording the gravestones, quite a mammoth task, considering the book contains 535 gravestones, covering names and dates of 1,135 people.

It also includes a selection of obituaries from local newspapers covering the years from 1967-2016, which give a great deal more about family connections. The research was complemented by the use of drone technology to record the location of grave plots.

You can read full details with regards to both books in the article below. Please click on it to enlarge.

You can read the list of Clare Roots Publications here

Ennis Book Club Festival Recommends

'One of the year's most arresting, humbling and acute memoirs. It is a catch-in-the-throat, life-affirming work that you want to gulp down in one and recommend to all your friends. Fitzmaurice tells her story in sparkling prose that is as sinewy as her new sea-strengthened body, and as admirable and boundless as her spirit' Sunday Times

Ruth's tribe are her lively children and her filmmaker husband, Simon, who has Motor Neurone Disease and can only communicate with his eyes. Ruth's other 'tribe' are the friends who gather at the cove in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, and regularly throw themselves into the freezing cold water, just for kicks.

'The Tragic Wives' Swimming Club', as they jokingly call themselves, meet to cope with the extreme challenges life puts in their way, not to mention the monster waves rolling over the horizon. Swimming is just one of the daily coping strategies as Ruth fights to preserve the strong but now silent connection with her husband. As she tells the story of their marriage, via diagnosis to their current precarious situation, Ruth also charts her passion for sea swimming – culminating in a midnight swim under the full moon on her wedding anniversary.

An invocation to all of us to love as hard as we can, and live even harder, I Found My Tribe is an urgent and uplifting letter to a husband, family, friends, the natural world and the brightness of life.

Ruth will be speaking at the 2018 Ennis Book Club Festival, and it's always great when your book club has read some of the author's work.

Congratulations also to all winners, including all those nominated. You are all appreciated for your contributions to genealogy and family history.

Thank you to all who took the time to vote and make nominations in the first place. If your favourite ROCKSTAR wasn't in the list this year, then make sure you nominate them next year... candidates need at least two nominations to be included. There are many who work tirelessly as volunteers.. you know them, why not nominate them...

The biggest THANK YOU goes to John D. Reid who started with this idea over six years ago... This takes a lot of time and work to plan, organise and conduct. I hope John gets a chance to take a well earned rest now.

Visit his blog at http://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.com/ and be sure to leave a comment.

Debra Carter has worked with Ancestry Pro Genealogists in London since its inception in January last year. Her main areas of expertise are England and Australia, although she also researches Ireland, the United States, Canada and Norway. She is particularly interested in the movement of people between those countries and women's stories within that. Prior to working with ProGen, Debra owned and operated her own genealogy business in both London and Melbourne, teaching adult's genealogy, researching for private clients and volunteering at a local historical society. Her love of genealogy stemmed from her mother's interest and early research which she took over around ten years ago. Her genealogical education includes the Advanced Diploma in Local History from Oxford University and distinction completion of the Certificate in Family History from the Society of Australian Genealogists. Debra is also a full member of AGRA, the Association of Genealogists & Researchers in Australia.
